The increasing use of so-called keyhole surgery is depriving surgeons of the ability to take advantage of the sense of touch they use in open surgery. However, a small, sensor-laden wireless capsule developed at Vanderbilt University provides something similar. Surgeons can guide the capsule with a laparoscope and press it against internal surfaces to get feedback on a computer screen indicating local stiffness.
