The salmonella outbreak linked to chickens that came from three Foster Farms plants in California has affected 278 people across 17 states, and the CDC said on Wednesday that antibiotic resistance was responsible for the hospitalization of 42% of the patients. The average hospitalization rate for salmonellosis is about 20%, making the rate tied to the outbreak unusually high, CDC spokesman John O'Connor said.
