The significance of short-line railroads to the U.S. economy was the center of discussion at The Rail Summit in Chicago last week. For instance, short lines are a cost-efficient shipping choice and they contribute to a stronger and more competitive manufacturing sector, said OmniTRAX Chairman Brad Skinner. Railroads in general can move a ton of freight 202 miles on a gallon of fuel, making them more energy-efficient than trucks, according to a Transportation Department study.
