Woodstock, Ga., about 30 miles outside Atlanta, is a case study on the benefits of including mixed-use development when revitalizing an area. The town used a planning grant to redesign its city center more than a decade ago, and it says the 17% increase in downtown property values can be attributed to the area's walkability. Research has found that cities that embrace walkability have higher property values.
