Many medical schools have created policies on conflicts of interest since 2008, however almost two-thirds do not have policies that limit ties to industry, which can include gifts, drug samples and payments for travel and speaking, according to a study by the Institute on Medicine as a Profession. The report in the journal Academic Medicine found just 16% of programs met national standards in at least half of COI areas, and no school met every standard.
