Fifth-graders at Webster Hill Elementary School in Connecticut recently imagined the pilgrims' voyage to America by taking a trip across a field while reading a script about the historical journey. "We make it as real as we can for a 10-year-old," said their teacher, Jeff Cowan, who recently was honored as Connecticut's 2013 History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Cowan's students also participate in a yearlong government simulation in which they visit the state Legislature, elect their own leaders, hold hearings and pass bills.
