Veterinary researchers at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine report that the three strains of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus ravaging U.S. swine populations originated in China, but it remains unclear how the virus entered the U.S. The virus isn't transmitted to humans, but testing showed it shares some features of a bat coronavirus, suggesting the virus may have jumped species or could develop the ability to do so. Although reporting is not required, as of Oct. 6, 18 states had documented 768 cases of the virus, each of which may represent thousands of unreported affected animals.
