Fourth-graders at Tashua Elementary School in Trumbull, Conn., are learning more about the challenges faced by children with disabilities. Students recently spent a day performing activities such as navigating an obstacle course in a wheelchair to learn what life is like for individuals with a disability. The "Sensitivity Day" event was part of a district-wide effort to combat bullying.
Wyoming school districts individually develop their gifted-education programs, which has led to some inconsistencies in identification statewide. To help share more information about gifted education, two educators have launched a nonprofit resource group for parents and educators. The Wyoming Association for Gifted Children seeks to raise awareness about gifted education in the state.
School districts should create programs that include coaching, modeling and frequent feedback for teachers and paraprofessionals on proper techniques for lifting and maneuvering students with physical disabilities, asserts Kathy Espinoza, assistant vice president of ergonomics and safety for Keenan, an insurance brokerage firm. "Students may have brittle bones or attempt to go limp when being lifted," she said, adding, "These are things to be aware of and prepare for."
Enrollment in Monroe County, N.Y., special-education programs decreased 30% over the past five years, and more students with disabilities are being educated in their home school districts instead of by Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, according to an investigative report. This change is reflective of a larger trend in the state in which school districts are taking steps to meet students' needs within the district and include more students with disabilities in general-education settings.
