Technological advancements in drilling have helped energy companies in Colorado produce more oil and natural gas despite the industry's small presence in the state, said Doug Flanders, director of policy and external affairs at the Colorado Oil and Gas Association. Last year, companies produced more than 48 million barrels of oil and nearly 1,651,100,000 thousand cubic feet of natural gas, compared with 2010 figures of 32 million barrels of oil and 1,626,000,000 thousand cubic feet of gas. "The state is reaping the economic benefits of increased production while lessening the environmental impact of development," Flanders said.
