Feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus can infect cats and are risk factors for lymphosarcoma even in young animals, according to veterinarian Bernhard Pukay, who explains the ways cats can be exposed and some ways to protect them from the potentially devastating consequences of these infections. Testing for the viruses, vaccinating when indicated, monitoring infections and reducing contributing factors to lymphosarcoma such as secondhand smoke are some important strategies, Dr. Pukay writes.
