The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University have received almost $10 million from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to target a complication of sickle cell disease called acute chest syndrome, which causes deaths in children. NHLBI will provide about $2 million annually over five years to help both institutions find a drug that can stop or stem lung damage and develop therapies for sickle cell complications.
