New technology that uses high-voltage electric fields to manipulate electrically charged molecules in a combustion flame could lead to much more efficient power plants and a significant reduction in pollution, according to Seattle-based ClearSign Combustion. The process uses much less power than previous flame manipulation achieved with the use of plasma. "There's been interest in electric fields for some time, but nothing with as strong an effect as they've [ClearSign] demonstrated," commented Michael Frenklach, professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.
