Machines increasingly connected by the Internet will give maintenance crews the data they need to intervene in a timely way and thus avoid costly unscheduled factory downtime, according to a new report from General Electric. "New ecosystems of connected machines have the potential to increase efficiency, minimize waste, and make the people operating them make smarter decisions" with the potential to save millions of labor hours, the company said. In addition, GE expects the "convergence of machine and intelligent data" to create new jobs for workers skilled in data and technology.
