Research in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the use of gloves and gowns upon entering the intensive care unit reduced rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection but not rates of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus infection. The study, which took place from January to October 2012, involved medical and surgical ICUs in 20 U.S. hospitals.
