Google is adding a native messaging application programming interface to the Chrome browser. It is intended to replace the old Netscape Plug-in API, which Google is dropping after January, according to a blog post written by Google software engineer Sergey Ulanov. "One of the main use cases for NPAPI plug-ins in Chrome apps and extensions was to connect with native applications installed on the same computer. ... To support such use cases without the need for NPAPI, we've recently added the Native Messaging API," Ulanov wrote.
