Southeast Milk-owned Gustafson's Dairy closed its doors on Friday after more than 100 years in business, although products from the Green Cove Springs, Fla., plant will continue to be sold in stores, SMI President Joe Wright said. Gustafson's is the latest in a recent string of dairy shutdowns in the state that have been fueled by the price of corn, increasing diesel prices and changing consumer trends and preferences, according to SMI and Gary Newton, environmental administrator for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
