America's rail industry is determined to implement an interoperable positive train control system, but to do so in a safe manner will require an extension of the 2015 deadline, which is unrealistic because of a number of challenges, writes Association of American Railroads President and CEO Edward Hamberger. "Interoperability is key if PTC is to work seamlessly and safely across more than 60,000 miles of nationwide rail network and this cannot occur by the mandated deadline," Hamberger writes.
