HHS spokeswoman Joanne Peters said online health insurance exchanges were down late Sunday because of a network failure experienced by private contractor Verizon Terremark. A connectivity issue caused the data center to shut down, affecting HealthCare.gov and similar websites operated by the District of Columbia and 14 states. "Secretary Sebelius spoke with the CEO of Verizon ... to discuss the situation, and they committed to fixing the problem as soon as possible," Peters said.
