A Healthgrades report found that almost 235,000 deaths and 158,000 complications from 2010 to 2012 could have been prevented if all hospitals provided five-star-level care. Patients with conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and those undergoing colorectal surgeries were substantially more likely to die in one-star hospitals than in five-star hospitals. The lowest-rated hospitals had higher complication risks than the highest-rated facilities for procedures including hip replacement and carotid surgery.
