School districts are using a combination of intensive training programs and ongoing professional development to help principals succeed in their roles as leaders. With the principal as supervisor, a formalized process for supporting -- and conveying clear expectations -- to teacher leaders also is important, says ASCD's Ann Cunningham-Morris. "The role of the teacher leader is leading learning of their colleagues. They are seen as experts in the classroom around specific pedagogy," she says.
