Web programmers can improve program memory performance with middleware libraries such as Emscripten, said Google engineer Colt McAnlis at this week's O'Reilly Velocity conference. Emscripten's ability to convert code eliminates the need for JavaScript engines to do garbage collection on memory by giving the programmer more control over when memory is returned to the available pool. The resulting programs can run two to four times faster, McAnlis said.
