Dermatologic surgeons increasingly use fractional ablative lasers for scar revision because they alleviate symptoms, offer functional gains and enhance rehabilitation, says dermatologic surgeon Jill Waibel. The best results are achieved with a multimodal approach involving different lasers to remove pigmentation and a fractional ablative carbon dioxide or fractional ablative erbium laser, adjunctive therapy such as topical treatments, compression, punch biopsy or Z-plasty, Waibel says. Laser-assisted delivery of triamcinolone acetonide or 5-fluorouracil to the scar site may also enhance scar healing.
