Lambda Legal filed suit Tuesday on behalf of three same-sex couples seeking to reverse West Virginia's same-sex-marriage ban. The lawsuit claims that the state's statute banning same-sex marriage, passed in 2000, violates the couples' right to equal protection under the law. "West Virginia's state motto 'Mountaineers are Always Free' is hollow until all West Virginians -- no matter who they love -- have the freedom to marry," Beth Littrell, a staff attorney with Lambda Legal, said in a statement.
