Crews have completed the first tunnel for the Crossrail project in London that will increase the city's rail capacity by 10%. "Crossrail has not only completed the first Crossrail tunnel under London but has reached the halfway point for our tunneling machines with a phenomenal 13 miles of tunnels constructed to date," said Crossrail Program Director Andy Mitchell. A second tunnel is slated to be finished this winter, and six other boring machines will complete tunneling in 2014, officials said. The project is costing about $24 billion.
