A study in the journal Rheumatology that looked at the foot arch during walking found that lower back pain was 50% more common among women with flat feet than those with normal or high arches. Senior author Marian Hannan at the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston suggested that other muscles may help compensate for flat feet, which could be a factor in the increased risk of lower back pain.
