Three reports discussed at the ACG Annual Scientific Meeting underscore the need for caution and skepticism when approaching energy drinks and weight-loss supplements, writes registered dietitian Joan Salge Blake. The case reports addressed patients who suffered liver failure associated with ingestion of the SlimQuick weight-loss supplement with green tea extract, liver damage associated with black cohosh and liver failure linked to regular use of Rockstar Sugar Free. "If the product sounds too good to be true, it likely is," Blake writes, urging patients to tell doctors about all supplements they are using.
