A middle school in Nashville, Tenn., has adopted a math curriculum that challenges students to explain their answers in whole-class discussions and sometimes in writing. Teachers also guide students through several ways to solve problems and encourage students to discuss what their answers mean in real-world situations. "It's really exciting to hear them talk and use all of the math terms to explain their thinking and construct arguments," teacher Cicely Woodard said.
