The number of non-doctors facing lawsuits for laser treatments gone awry rose from about 36% of all cases in 2008 to almost 78% in 2011, and some 80% of the cases involved procedures performed outside a conventional physician's office, according to a study published in JAMA Dermatology. Lasers can cause harm and are classified as prescription medical devices, but state laws vary as to who may administer laser treatments, said Jeffrey Salomon, an assistant clinical professor of plastic surgery at Yale University School of Medicine.
