The Oregonian newspaper's analysis shows that 0.2% of high-school seniors failed to meet the Oregon writing requirements for graduation, after 23% of the class failed the state's writing test during their junior year. Many students were allowed to write two essays that were graded by local teachers. School officials attribute the success to better writing instruction -- giving students more examples of acceptable writing, improved feedback and more practice.
