Palliative care checklists used by NICU nurses helped ensure terminally ill neonates received quality and compassionate care and empowered parents to make decisions, researchers from Christiana Care Health System reported at a National Association of Neonatal Nurses conference. Use of the checklist led to completion of a majority of interventions relevant to parental involvement. "Palliative and end-of-life care is one of the important services that we as neonatal care nurses and neonatal nurse practitioners provide, and research has shown better coping skills for parents if consistent end-of-life care is provided," nurse practitioner Karen McDonald said.
