U.S. researchers looked at data on 16,604 children who underwent solid organ transplantation and found that 3% of them were at greater risk of developing end-stage kidney disease, particularly those who underwent intestinal or lung transplants. Although liver transplantation is linked to the highest ESKD risk in adults, the study in the journal Pediatrics showed that children who had liver transplants had the lowest risk for the condition. The findings indicate the need to monitor pediatric transplant patients for early signs of kidney problems, researchers said.
