Airlines such as United and American Airlines are announcing plans to add more pilots to their staff, as a shortage is on the horizon. Greater training requirements, more pilots retiring and longer rest periods are all factors contributing to the shortage. Kent Lovelace, chairman of the aviation department at the University of North Dakota, expects there to be a shortfall of 35,000 pilots over the next two decades.
