Three children from South Sudan who contracted a strain of wild poliovirus in spite of their previous immunization with oral polio vaccine are among the latest victims of a polio outbreak that has claimed more than 170 people in Somalia, 14 in Kenya and three in Ethiopia. The World Health Organization, which is sending expert teams to South Sudan, is urging countries to strengthen surveillance for cases of acute flaccid paralysis often associated with the sudden onset of polio.
