Set to take effect on Oct. 1, 2014, ICD-10 is poised to bring major changes to medical coding. The changes include more documentation, advanced training for staff and 69,000 available codes, up from the current 14,000. The new system also allows for further code expansion in the future. An ICD-10 ToolKit is available from the Radiology Business Management Association to help practices transition to the new codes. Several unknowns will only be realized when the system fully comes online, but timely preparation should minimize negative impact on practices, experts say.
