Data from the Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth study revealed five predictors of first-onset substance abuse disorders in 12- to 17-year-olds with bipolar disorder, including behavioral problems, history of substance abuse and antidepressant nonadherence. Among the 54 teens with bipolar disorder who experienced first onset of SUD, 17% said they used cannabis and 16% reported alcohol abuse. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
