Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are working to develop a tabletop lab that could whip up small, custom batches of medicine as needed, potentially for battlefield use. The project, funded with a $10 million grant from the Defense Department, would also greatly reduce the time factor. "If they are successful -- and I believe they will be -- it’s going to be really a breakthrough," said Konstantin Konstantinov, vice president of late-stage process development at Genzyme. "It opens up many new possibilities that we have not seen before."
