In the midst of investigating chicken jerky pet food products produced in China that have been linked to illnesses in thousands of dogs and some cats, including some 600 deaths, the FDA is suggesting new pet food production guidelines to improve the safety of domestic and foreign-produced products. The proposed rules would call for pet food manufacturers to provide written plans for identifying, preventing and addressing any potential hazards and would give the government power to directly intervene during production. "These standards represent a fundamental shift in pet food safety standards, will raise the bar across the entire pet industry and ultimately ensure what's best for pets' health and safety," said Mike Hayes, director of food safety and quality at Del Monte Foods, maker of Meow Mix and other brands.
