A man in China developed an extremely rare form of melanoma on his gums, according to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine. Mucosal melanoma occurs in less than 1% of all cases of melanoma, a cancer that occurs in cells that produce pigments that color the skin. Doctors removed the gums and part of the man's upper jaw, and the cancer has not come back in the six months since, according to the report.
