The Kardia Band, a wrist sensor intended for monitoring heart rate and detecting atrial fibrillation, has been launched by AliveCor. The device was created to provide a single-lead electrocardiogram transmitted through an Apple Watch app.
A systematic review of 12 studies involving more than 190,000 patients showed bisphosphonate therapy was linked with a 27% higher risk of atrial fibrillation and 40% increased risk of serious atrial fibrillation. Bisphosphonate use, however, did not raise patients' risk of stroke or cardiovascular death. The findings appeared in the journal Chest.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute researchers have filed a 510(k) approval application to the FDA for a smartphone platform that can detect slight skin color changes. The mobile application, which could help detect possible atrial fibrillation, assesses heart rhythm, heart rate and respiration rate by scanning the index finger of a patient using the video camera on a smartphone.
The 2 million-patient PINNACLE Registry, designed to improve the quality of outpatient cardiac care, next year will expand reporting on atrial fibrillation. A new module will include fields for data about the control of rate and rhythm as well as newer classes of anticoagulants.
If a racehorse is not performing well or showing signs of acute exercise intolerance, it suggests that the animal is suffering from atrial fibrillation, or abnormal heart rhythm, said veterinarian Kelsey A. Hart. "If the horse needs to go back to doing its job, and it is not performing at the desired level, then a veterinarian may attempt to convert that horse back to a sinus rhythm either pharmacologically or electrically," Hart said at AVMA's meeting in Atlanta.
