Radar-equipped satellites and planes, along with ground studies, are helping scientists predict where sinkholes might occur along the shore of the Dead Sea. The researchers discovered emergence patterns that can tell them when to alert officials. "In one case, we alerted the government, and they designed a road that bypasses the sinkhole area," says Tel Aviv University geophysicist Ran N. Nof, the study's co-author.
