Restrictive diets can be a front for unhealthy eating patterns that lead to nutrition deficiencies, sometimes by relying on highly processed and empty-calorie foods, registered dietitian Tamara Duker Freuman writes. A "plant-based" diet is not going to be healthy if it only includes foods such as macaroni and cheese, fries or juice, Freuman writes, and some people develop orthorexia, adopting a restricted diet just to show others they want to be healthy.
