The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service says its ability to respond to a salmonella outbreak affecting 20 states and more than 300 people was not hampered by the government shutdown. According to FSIS, 8,000 inspectors worked through the shutdown to fulfill their regular inspection duties. In addition, the CDC also tracked the salmonella outbreak during the shutdown and even called some employees back to work prior to the government reopening to contain the outbreak.
