The federal shutdown lasted 16 days, but its effect on the research community is still being felt. Many government-backed agencies are still assessing the fallout as their furloughed employees return to work. "We are just beginning to assess the full impact of the shutdown on our science, and it will be, at the very least, a few days and, in some cases, a few weeks before we will know the sum of the effects," said U.S. Geological Survey Acting Director Suzette Kimball, whose comments are echoed by officials at the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and NASA, among others.
