U.K. researchers discovered a microRNA-based biomarker for rapidly diagnosing sepsis. Blood samples from three groups of patients were analyzed to rule out which group has a higher level of microRNAs in the blood, a method which was also done in a larger group of sepsis patients. Results published in PLoS ONE revealed that sepsis patients have a higher level of a specific group of microRNAs and diagnosis took only two hours with 86% accuracy, compared with the normal length of two days.
