The federal government shutdown has affected programs across the NIH, the world's largest funder of medical research. Children and adults with cancer or rare genetic diseases are no longer being accepted into clinical trials at the NIH's Clinical Center. "The Clinical Center is often called 'the House of Hope' and the House of Hope had to close its doors to new patients because that's what a shutdown does," NIH Director Francis Collins said.
