Powassan virus is a potentially deadly tick-borne disease first identified in a 4-year-old boy in Canada in 1958. Details of the case were kept private, but his sister has shared the story of the boy, who died from the infection. An investigation into his death led to the discovery of the virus. New York has had 15 documented cases of Powassan virus since 2004, and five of those patients died. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York has urged the federal government to put more resources toward combating tick-borne disease.
