A study of more than 100 women who had surgery for endometriosis found that 88% had at least one sonographic sign of adenomyosis. The study was presented at the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology meeting. The most common finding was irregular endometrial-myometrial junction, seen in 86.3% of cases, myometrial cysts in 85.3% of cases, hyperechoic islands in 80% of cases and asymmetrical myometrial thickening in 75.6% of patients. Others included parallel shadowing, linear striations and localized adenomyomas. The findings may have implications for fertility treatment and surgical decisions, said lead author Dr. Vered Eisenberg.
