Older adults with high omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid in the blood have reduced risk of small brain infarcts or other lesions that could cause cognitive impairment, dementia and stroke, according to new data. A study of patients aged 65 and older who underwent brain scans, which were repeated after five years, showed that about 20% of healthy patients had silent brain infarcts, but those with high long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid content in blood had 40% lower prevalence of brain lesions and had better white matter condition in their brains. The study appeared in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
