Preemies cared for in private NICU rooms had lower language acquisition test scores, exhibited more externalizing behavior and tended to have lower motor scores when compared at 2 years of age with children who were in open units, researchers reported in the Journal of Pediatrics. The study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis was done at a hospital with low levels of parental visits and infant holding. Researchers did not find any medical differences between the groups.
