Weight-loss surgery such as gastric banding, gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy is more effective in treating obesity and type 2 diabetes than diet and exercise, according to a study of almost 800 obese patients published in the British Medical Journal. The study found that, over a two-year period, surgery resulted in increased remission rates for type 2 diabetes and an average of 57 more pounds lost than through diet, exercise, behavioral therapy, medication or other nonsurgical treatments.
